History
The first inhabitants of Rio were Tupi Indians. The year 1502 marked the time a Portuguese explorer made his way to Guanabara Bay. The name Rio de Janeiro comes from the day he found it, January 1st, and how he originally thought the bay was a mouth of a river and not a bay so, River of January. A battle between the Portuguese and the French Huguenots took place on January 20th, 1567. Settlers were attracted to Rio's nice climate.
