Overview
There are many cultures throughout the city which all come together to form Rio de Janeiro. There is a Portuguese, Indian, and African impact of the culture in Rio and Brazil in general. Portuguese is the national language of Rio de Janeiro. The influencing cultures are more dominantly present in certain parts of the city. There are many traditional foods, dances, and music choices found in Rio. Throughout the city, there are many celebrations celebrated despite economic and social challenges.

Visual ArtsThere is art seen throughout the city. There is beauty and art within buildings and even on the sidewalk. Many of Rios urban areas can be found with culture and art incorporated. Even all the sidewalks along Copacabana Beach and designed with a wavy black and white pattern. An awesome fun fact is that street art in Rio is legal, graffiti is found all throughout the city and especially in the old olympic village.

Cultural InstitutionsRio de Janeiro is home to many of Brazil's most highly regarded art institutions and museums. The Brazilian Academy of Letters headquarters are in Rio along with the National Library, founded in 1810, which holds 60,000 volumes from the Portuguese royal library. Within Rio there are many other major museums and many theaters as well.

The Statue of Christ the RedeemerThe statue of Christ the Redeemer is a reinforced clay statue of Jesus Christ at the summit of Mount Corcovado. It was dedicated to Isabel, princess regent of Brazil and daughter of Emperor Pedro II, on October 12, 1931. It is 98 feet tall with arms that stretch 92 feet. It is the largest art-deco style sculpture in the world and is one of the most known landmarks in Rio. Since the completion, the statue has gone through many repairs and one thorough cleaning in 1980 for the visit of Pope John Paull II in. The statue has also gone through a major repair and refurbishing of the surface. There have been elevators and escalators added for tourists to have easier access to the statue. Known as one of the seven wonders of the world, people travel from across the globe to come see this statue making it one of the most special and defying landmarks of Rio.
