The People of Rio
- The name Cariocas is used to describe the people of Rio. This nickname comes from a South American Indian expression that means white man's house. Cariocas include people of American Indian, European, and African descent. Most Cariocas have two or three ancestors from these groups. Most of them speak Portuguese like all other Brazilians. Almost all people in Rio belong to a Roman Catholic church and participate in Macumba religious ceremonies. New Years Eve is a time for all Cariocas to come together wearing white and crowding the beaches for Macumba ceremonies.
